BIOGRAPHY

Michel MACRÉAU (1935-1995)
Michel Macréau, born in Paris in 1935, is a self-taught painter often associated with the Free Figuration and New Figuration movements. After a discreet start, he gained recognition in the 1960s with a direct, spontaneous, almost wild style of painting.
His work, blending figures, words, graffiti and symbols, translates a poetic revolt against pictorial conventions. Macréau paints as one writes a cry, in a visceral urgency.
He champions a raw expressiveness, where the human figure embodies both suffering and vitality. Admired by young artists in the 1980s, he is now recognized as a pioneer of street art and instinctive art. His work remains an ode to freedom and the energy of gesture.
