BIOGRAPHY

Philippe HIQUILY (1925-2013)

Philippe Hiquily, born in Paris in 1925, was a French sculptor and painter associated with the Nouveau Réalisme movement and kinetic sculpture. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, he gained recognition in the 1950s for his audacious metal assemblages, often inspired by the female form. Hiquily combined the rigor of industrial construction with a playful and poetic sensuality. His work, imbued with humor and irony, engages in a dialogue with the explorations of Calder and Tinguely. His works in iron or brass, whether kinetic or monumental, seem animated by a life of their own, oscillating between mechanics and eroticism. Winner of the Paris Biennale Prize in 1959, Hiquily left behind a singular body of work, straddling the line between dream, gesture, and modernity.
