BIOGRAPHY

Sol LEWITT (1928-2007)

Sol LeWitt, born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1928, was one of the great founders of theconceptual art and of the minimalism American. After studying fine arts in Syracuse, he rose to prominence in the 1960s with his famous Wall Drawings, vast mural compositions based on logical systems and precise instructions. For LeWitt, the idea takes precedence over execution: the work exists primarily as a concept. His geometric rigor and his pursuit of pure structure have profoundly influenced contemporary art. Despite this apparent austerity, his work reveals a poetry of number, line, and repetition. He died in 2007, recognized as a major thinker of artistic modernity.
